| Periodic burning is a necessary
part of prairie management in order to stimulate the growth of native
plants and to keep woody shrubs from encroaching. |
The goal for Robert Ridgway Grasslands NP is to provide
habitat for greater prairie-chicken and several other threatened and
endangered grassland-dependent birds. The sanctuary is adjacent to
state-owned land in Prairie Ridge State Natural Area, and attracts
species which need large areas of ideal habitat. A restored prairie
wetland has enhanced the value of this site, making it attractive to
bitterns, rails, and other wetland species which nest in adjacent
grasslands.
The Ridgway Grasslands NP is located on 40 acres, about 5 miles south
of Newton in Jasper County, and 1/2 mile from the Prairie Ridge SNA
headquarters. From Newton, go south on 1000E for 5 miles, pass the IDNR
office, and turn east on 400N for 1/2 mile. There is a parking area,
and visitors can enjoy trails through the restored prairie, and a
handicapped-accessible observation deck overlooking the wetland.
Stewardship activities include
additional seeding, periodic burns, and some mowing to improve the
quality of grassland habitat for the threatened and endangered species
using the area. To help with stewardship funds, note Ridgway Grasslands
on your donation and send it to Illinois Audubon Society, PO Box 2547,
Sprngfield, IL 62708.
