PLUM ISLAND SANCTUARY

Click here to read "Picking a Plum: How an Island was Preserved" by Marilyn F. Campbell. This article was first published in Illinois Audubon.

The long-term goal for Plum Island Sanctuary is to maintain roosting trees needed by the bald eagles which winter here, and return the island to its natural state by removing the junk and refuse left over from human activities.

Plum Island Sanctuary, about 45 acres in size, is located in the Illinois River across from Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County. There is no access to the sanctuary, which is closed to the public to protect both wildlife and Native American archaeological sites. The island and its wintering eagles are easily viewed from Starved Rock and from the Illinois Waterway Visitor's Center on Dee Bennett Road. Plum Island was preserved by a joint partnership with the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and the Trust for Public Land.

Stewardship includes removal of debris from periodic flooding, some control of exotic species, and replacing trees which were removed long ago to allow farming, and a later small airstrip. To assist with stewardship here, please mark your donation for Plum Island Sanctuary and mail to the Illinois Audubon Society, PO Box 2547, Springfield, IL 62708.
