KARCHER'S POST OAK WOODS
A DEDICATED ILLINOIS NATURE PRESERVE

Purple fringed orchid and other wildflowers appear in greater numbers after periodic burns. Fire has always been important to the maintenance of post oak woodlands.

The Society's goal at Karcher's Post Oak Woods NP is to protect an old-growth post oak woodland and its associated plants. This very high-quality natural area has been dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve for the highest degree of long-term protection.

This preserve is located on 40 acres in Hamilton County, near the town of Dahlgren. Public access is not available at this time.
Stewardship activities for this area include prescribed burning and the selective removal of exotic and invasive plants in order to maintain the high quality of this Illinois Natural Areas Inventory site.

To assist with stewardship, please note Post Oak Woods on your donation and forward it to the Illinois Audubon Society, PO Box 2547, Springfield, IL 62708.
