| Bremer Sanctuary volunteers
prepare seeds for a prairie restoration project. |
The goal at the H & B Bremer Wildlife Sanctuary is
to provide habitat for forest, savanna, and grassland birds. The
sanctuary is primarily upland oak-hickory forest, which provides
habitat for a variety of breeding birds. Old crop fields are being
restored to prairie and savanna. Forty acres of grassland has attracted
a breeding population of Henslow's Sparrow.
H & B Bremer Sanctuary is located on 243 acres in Montgomery
County, at the northeast edge of Hillsboro. Public access is available
from dawn to dusk, all year.
The Sanctuary is approximately 50 miles southeast of
Springfield. From
Interstate 55, take the Litchfield exit # 52 onto state route 16
east.
Continue east on 16 through Litchfield to Hillsboro (approximately 10
miles). Just past the first curve on 16, turn left onto E.
Seward and
enter the circle around the Hillsboro courthouse. Continue around
to
the north side of the courthouse, turn right onto N. Main and head
out
of town for 1 mile. The first left is Bremer Lane (note the
street
sign on your right with the IAS Sanctuary sign beneath it.) Turn
left
onto Bremer Lane (a gravel road), take the left fork and follow
the
lane to the sanctuary. It dead ends in our parking area in front
of
our barn.
The Hickory Hills Chapter of IAS provides
stewardship. A support group, Friends of Bremer Sanctuary, helps with
funding.
A local committee is working to
enhance the quality of habitats at Bremer Sanctuary and increase the
diversity of birds which use it. Priorities include the control of
exotic species, and restoration of savanna and grassland habitat by use
of prescribed burns, plantings, etc. A trail of several dozen bluebird
nestboxes is also maintained, as well as several hiking trails. A barn
is used for meetings and programs.
If you would like to help with stewardship at this sanctuary, please
note Bremer Sanctuary stewardship on your donation and forward it to
the Illinois Audubon Society, PO Box 2547, Springfield, IL 62708.
