The Society's goal at the Margery Adams Wildlife
Sanctuary is its use as an urban nature center. Environmental education
programming is provided to schools by appointment. The woods, walking
trails, and a small prairie restoration are maintained as an outdoor
classroom, as well as for the general public.
The 30-acre sanctuary is located on Clear Lake Avenue, on the east side
of Springfield, a few blocks west of the intersection of I-55 and I-72.
Trails are open daily, and there are several special public events
throughout the year. A support group, Friends of Adams Sanctuary,
provides some funding for programs and operation.
Stewardship is needed to make the
woods sustainable as a long-term teaching resource by stabilizing the
tree community and the control of some non-native plant species.
