Stamps For Wildlife Habitat
For many years, the Society has had a stamp
collection program, whereby stamps are collected, sorted, and sold to
benefit our sanctuaries. Recently, we have received some very nice
stamp collections, which helped raise more than $10,000 for new
sanctuaries. Guidelines for the "Stamps for Wildlife" program are as
follows:
|
|
 |
- Unused and foreign stamps are especially desirable
and bring in extra dollars.
- Commemorative (special issue) stamps are the
backbone of the project. Commemoratives include special subjects such
as insects, dinosaurs, breast cancer research, etc. They are larger in
size than the more common "definitives," such as flags, love, and
Christmas stamps. Theses smaller difinitives are not worth collecting
unless they were issued prior to 1940, or they are of larger
denominations of at least $1.00.
- Airmail, Express mail, and duck stamps are also
desirable, as are picture postcards.
- Damaged stamps are worthless, so do not collect and
send them in. It is a waste of everyone's time and the postage to send
them.
Stamps should be saved by cutting them from the
envelope, allowing at
least a 1/4" border on all sides. DO NOT tear or peel the stamp from
the envelope or packaging to which it may be stuck, as this will almost
certainly destroy the stamp's value.

Bird &
Butterfly Backyard Sanctuary Program
Citizens are encouraged to design plantings in their yards which are
favorable to butterflies and hummingbirds, and to put up feeders, and
maintain bird baths and nestboxes for other kinds of birds. To be
certified, owners must agree to minimal use of chemicals on their
properties. A $10 registration fee is required, and participants
receive a colorful certificate and free information on plantings,
garden design, butterfly gardens to visit, and an official sign for
their garden.
